Family Lore: Dave "The Scotsman" Thompson

On the top right corner of our metaphorical ancestor square is the Paternal Father corner, aka the Thompson Ancestral Line. Before we start researching The Thompson Corner Line, in order to be aware of some of the internalized biases we have, let us list out what we remember of the "Family Lore" that we grew up with about a certain Dave "The Scotsman" Thompson:

  • Our first male ancestor, on our Paternal Father's side, to get on a boat and sail from England to what is now called America;
  • His name was David Thompson (note the spelling includes a 'p');
  • He went by Dave "The Scotsman" Thompson;
  • He was from Scotland;
  • He had at least one son, and was therefore presumably married, as he was presumably also a monotheist from the Puritan Christianity Cultus;
  • Thompson Island, in what is now called Massachusetts, belong to him, he lived there, and it was later named after him.
  • At some point after owning the aforementioned island, he died.
  • Eventually, down through the generations, you get to My Father, Paul A. Thompson.
  • According to The Lore, My Paternal Grandfather, David A. Thompson, was the last male descendent of this specific Thompson line. (This "Last of the Line" mindset and how it affected me, will be written about later at a different site and will be linked to once completed).
I also grew up believing that Dave "The Scotsman" Thompson had moved from Scotland to England to work in the working class fish industry, but I honestly cannot tell you if that was actual The Lore, or a dream I had, or an inference I made, or some sort of genetic memory, or a dream-memory sent by one of my ancestors... Unclear. But Dave "The Scotsman" Thompson working at some point as a fish industry individual is possibly part of the larger The Lore.

What is true and what is distorted memory is what I will attempt to untangle moving forward, but no promises, as sometimes with what historical resources are available: there's no way to know for sure.
